12th Annual Seaside Slide

Presented by Stay Covered

What: 7 mile Paddleboard & SUP Race
When: Saturday April 10, 2010 @ 8.30 am
Where: Seaside Reef, San Diego – California.

The Seaside Slide is a grass roots event hosting local paddlers and regional standouts for the opening of the paddling competition season in California. The weather this year is looking to shape up nicely with high pressure settling over the area, a calm and glassy ocean would be the perfect conditions to break records on Saturday.

Present in 2010, will be last year winner, George Plsek who finished in 2009 with a time of 1:11:03, 7 minutes shy the race record of 1:04:15 by Sean Richardson. In the SUP division it was Thomas Gallagher took top honors last year with a time of 1:11:33 closely behind the fastest paddler. The SUP division, with its growing popularity, is expected to receive a record number of entrants. The 1st perpetual Seaside Slide Trophy for the SUP division will be unveiled on Saturday!

Race Director, Mark Cappa, former National paddling Champion and President of Stay Covered Surf Accessories getting ready for this year race, commented on the event location, “this picturesque course passes some of San Diego’s most famous surfing coast including Swamis and Cardiff. It’s a beautiful place to paddle!”

The race checking will start at 7.30 am Saturday on the Seaside Reef parking lot. Then paddlers will navigate the shore break to the “Starting Line” along side the sailboat - Windara - anchored about 400 yards off the surf line. The paddlers will form a line along side the boat, ready for a “count of 3” start given from the boat.

The course follows the kelp line North to Moonlight Beach - Encinitas where paddlers will turn around the buoy located off the beach and head back toward the “Starting Line”. Paddlers will have to decide to either stay inside the kelp bed on calmer water or outside with the shortest distance. The choice of the course might be decisive when seconds separate paddlers.

Paddler times will be taken as they pass the boat on their right side and relayed to shore for immediate results. Paddlers then will make their way to shore for the award ceremony, raffles, food and drinks.

The Awards will be presented on the beach after the last paddler finishes the race and exits the water. The 4 best times in each division will receive awards, and the first paddler and SUP finisher will have their names engraved on the perpetual trophy. After the awards there will be a raffle of products donated by event sponsors Stay Covered Surf Accessories, Rainbow Sandals, Sticky Bumps, Xcel Wetsuits, Sean Riley Surfboards and more.

The Seaside Slide is looking forward to another exciting paddling race as traditional paddlers will be pressured by SUPers for the fastest times on the water…
